How to Split Travel Expenses With Friends

Money is the thing most likely to sour a group trip — not because anyone is dishonest, but because nobody wants to be the one bringing it up on day three.

Pick a method before you land

Either everyone throws a fixed amount into a shared pot at the start (simple, but awkward if it runs out), or everyone pays for things as they go and you settle up at the end. For most trips, pay-as-you-go plus a running tally is easier to keep fair.

Log expenses the same day, in one currency

Waiting until the last night to reconstruct four days of receipts never works — someone always forgets the taxi. Log each cost right after it happens, and pick one currency for the whole trip so nobody's doing exchange-rate math mid-argument.

Settle up once, at the end

Resist settling every single expense on the spot — it multiplies bank transfers for no reason. Let a shared list net everything out to one final payment per person, then pay however's easiest: cash, Revolut, or a bank transfer.
