Equal, Percentage, or by Days: Ways to Split a Shared Expense

"Just split it evenly" is the default for a reason — it's simple, and it's fair often enough. But it stops being fair the moment the group or the cost itself isn't actually even.

Equal split

Everyone pays the same share. Best for things everyone uses identically — a shared dinner, a Netflix subscription, a taxi everyone rode in. The moment usage clearly differs, equal starts to feel unfair even if nobody says so out loud.

Percentage split

Each person pays a set share you define — useful when contributions were agreed differently up front, like a couple splitting rent 60/40 by income, or a group where one person invited two extra guests who should cover more.

Split by days present

Best for trips and stays where people arrive and leave on different days. Someone who's there for 3 of 10 days shouldn't pay the same share of the Airbnb as someone there the whole time — this method does that math automatically instead of everyone eyeballing it.
