How to Collect Money for a Group Gift Without Awkwardness
Group gifts go wrong when the organiser has to chase everyone for money, or when everyone is expected to pay the same regardless of their budget.
Pick the gift and the budget first
Agree on the idea and an approximate total before collecting anything. People are more comfortable chipping in when they know the number.
Offer a suggested amount, not a fixed one
A suggested share, with room to pay a little less or more, keeps everyone included. Nobody has to explain their finances.
The organiser should not be out of pocket
Pay from the money collected, or log what you paid and who owes you. That way the person who did the work does not also cover the cost.
