How to Spend Less on Groceries: Compare Shops Before You Buy

Prices for the same products differ between supermarkets, and the cheapest shop for one product is often not the cheapest for another.

Compare the whole basket, not single products

One cheap product proves little. Compare what your usual list adds up to in each shop, and only for products you really buy.

Splitting your shopping can save, but it costs time

Buying some items in one shop and some in another can save money, but only if the extra trip is short. Count your own time and transport.

Check the unit price and the date

Compare the price per kilogram or litre, not the size of the pack, and check how old the price is: shops change prices often and offers end.

Treat published price lists as a guide

In some countries shops must publish their price lists, which makes comparison easier. They are a useful guide, but always confirm the price in the shop.
